why do the media call ppl who have lost their lives from drug abuse ‘victim’s?

Princess B2B 29th Nov 08. asked:

the only thing they are ‘victimn’s to is their own stupidity
when i read about a family losing their lives cos a drunk crashes into their car then they are VICTIMNS…when a stupid woman dies from overdosing on heroin then thats her own damn fault! she chose to risk her life! why are the 2 portrayed in the same context.
i get that they are victimns in a way but i hate that they are portrayed in a way where we are suppose to feel sorry for them…i pity them but im not going to feel sorry that they died when they did it to themselves.

So a person can’t be a victim of themselves?

yeah I know what you mean but, in all reality it is true. They’re victims of their own decisions, victims of their own stupidity, victims of the drug.

Because most people consider addiction to be a disease, like alcoholism. So when you become addicted to a drug, and it ends up killing you, you have fallen victim to the addiction. Addiction is an extremely hard thing to overcome.Hope this was helpful.

Yeah, the interesting thing to me is when I saw a commercial on TV with 2 women in a car & 1 woman lit a cigarette. The person driving reacted by driving 90mph & then stopped the car & said “You’re playing w/ “my” life so why shouldn’t I play with “yours”?

However in reality most people that drink alcohol do drive because nobody really sits at home & drinks; they drink in bars and pubs- socially. Don’t know how much they drink. Don’t care. But they get in cars and drive home. That’s playing w/ people’s lives as well & it happens everyday. But that’s okay. Nobody says anything about that. No commercials there.

I don’t think a person on heroin is “stupid” and I think it’s very childish of you to call it that. I don’t drink but I don’t think people that drink are “stupid”. And yes, sometimes they kill people on the road (actually , alot of times).

People just have problems. Drinking, gambling, porn addiction, sex addiction, drug addiction, food addiction, stealing (some people can’t stop doing it for the thrill, even though they have money. Look at Winona Ryder. $10 million per film & she was caught stealing).
