they tend to learn on it to take the pain away but the bad thing is, its often worse when they sober up then before you know it they are addicted! sad sad situation

Maybe the question should be, why do so many drug and alcohol abusing women get battered?

Maybe its their way of dealing with it. They are scared and its easier in some peoples mind to abuse these substances rather than finding help.

It’s an escape from the awful life they have. It’s a coping strategy. Most coping strategies women develop in these situations are pretty unhealthy.

of course it makes it worse, but to the person using the drug, they don’t care. They just want to numb the pain & escape into their drug world

because it’s their way of coping with life.they already lost their self esteem and have been made them feel worthless.there is help out there for them, but some are to scarce to leave because they think they will fail and not be able to make it on their on.

sometimes its their only way of escaping the everyday terror they face… or the memories if they were lucky enough to break way…

i say this knowing that , in some respect, i was one.. married for 6 years, emotionally and semi physically abused, and ill… i had numerous surgeries, and because of those, became chemically addicted to narcotics.. now, it was not my choice to get addicted, but that happens when you need them to relieve pain for so long.. anyway, they became a way of escaping the hurt i felt… and i didnt feel bad about it because i needed them for pain reasons anyway….

i became very depressed, and began taking anti depressents.. one day, my best friend came along, and gave me strength.. i gt away from my marriage, got divorced, got off all drugs.. but that was also very very hard… drug and alcohol addiction is a very difficult addiction to break, even for the strongest of people.. it physically gets a hold of your body… it all takes a lot of timee, support, and strength!

These days to stay in any relationship where one is battered is of the womans choice, unfortunatly it is because they have such low self esteem and beleive it when they are told they are no good. There is so much help out there for these women but they choose not to seek it. It is a very sad thing.

Escape the sad reality of their lives. Probably the reason most people use drugs and alcohol. Not just battered women.

I’ve never heard that claim before..where did you get the idea that many battered women abuse drugs and alcohol?
And out of curiosity, do many battered men do the same?

Some battered women abuse drugs and alcohol because it dulls the pain from their abuse and they are sometimes depressed.

They do? Ok. Well, I’m sure it’s the same reason anyone abuses alcohol and drugs: poorly chosen avoidance tactic.
