Are people getting meaner?

Shuo C asked:

is it just me or are people getting less and less polite, more self-centered, and tend to focus on themselves and what affects them rather than the consequences of their actions. Especially online. I have noticed the revolution on MMORPG’s. People used to call the new players newbies, which wasn’t too mean. Then they started getting ruder and ruder. Here is the evolution:

New
Newbie
Newb
Nube
Nub
Noob
n00b-this is the rudest one. Leetspeak has changed this word and given it an incredibly negative connotation.

If someone called you a newbie, wouldn’t you react better that that than if someone yelled n00b? Also, on the internet i have noticed people being very disrespectful to those that they disagree with. They will possibly swear and make someone feel bad on purpose, even if this is unjustified. Then, in real life this is even worse. Consequences for murders and other crime is at an all-time low. You would have to kill several people before you got executed or even jailed for life. In Canada execution has even been banned, and the highest punishment you could face even after killing hundreds of people is life in jail with possibility of parole after 25 years!! 25 years! that’s way too lenient. As well, there are alot more rude drivers, who pay less and less attention on the road and are completely focused on themselves. As a result, there are more accidents, as well as more people generally acting careless or with disregard. Also, people are swearing alot more in real life as well, and vandalism and drugs and alcohol abuse is also skyrocketing. Finally, i have noticed that teenagers nowadays are more disrespectful, especially to other peers. the average teenager is either gossiping non-stop and annoying others around them, or a bunch of sneering idiots who think they are better than everyone else. Myspace and Facebook have further worsened this issue, causing more and more teens to think that they are the center of the universe. Popularity has resulted in teenagers forgetting what they are supposed to do in school and instead act stupid on purpose and try to be a slacker/athletic type person to be liked. I know this is a brute generalization but it is at least true for about 80% of the population. The compassionate nature of businesses has all but vanished, to be replaced by corporate greed and “cranking up the prices to raise profits.” Most commercials you see are absolute lies or is an exaggeration of the actual product. The only seemingly friendly people are the business men who try to sell stuff to you, but their generosity immediately disappears once you buy their products. The compassionate nature of us humans has all but disappeared in an Industrial push for money. Has anyone noticed this?

question about anti-depressant pills?

Sarah S asked:

Hi. I went to my college counseling center today for possible depression. And even before we started, I started crying for no reason… After talking with the counselor, she suggested I should see psychiatrist and take some pills to help myself. But I feel that it’s ridiculous, I don’t think I’m that helpless to take pills. Is that misconception? I really don’t want to take pills because it’s not going to change my life. Did anyone take the pill before? Can you share an experience?

*p.s. I’m not abused or drug addict or anything, I’m just depressed about life…

thanks
these answers are great
but for more info

i know i will never do it but i constantly think about ending my life. and it seems like bad things are happening to me always. i been somewhat binge eating even though i’m not hungry. i lost desire in school.

if my counseling center counselor recommended me to go see psychiatrist and think about take pills, you can guess how bad my condition is….
