Is it appropriate to notify his doctor of prescription drug abuse?

Cinderella asked:

My boyfriend of 5 years has recently been diagnosed with depression/anxiety AND is a recovering alcoholic. After trying many meds he and his doctor settled on Ativan along with prozac (which he is taking as prescribed). His Ativan dose is .5 mg and he has been advised by his doc and therapist to take no more than 3 a day. It’s become a regular habit for him to double up and take 6 or 7 a day and it makes him “crazy” not to mention adding the effects of alcohol when he “falls off the wagon”. It’s tearing our family apart and I really don’t know if it’s appropriate for me to notify his doc. He was recently out of Ativan for a week because his doc was on vacation and, if it makes sense, for 7 short days I got to see my boyfriend once again. Any suggestions?
