Drug Addiction Facts

Drug addicts are not failures or people with poor morals. This is an image sometimes portrayed by the media. The fact is, however, that addiction is a disease that can be treated. Addicts, and families of addicts, who believe that there is no hope can find comfort in knowing that successful treatments are available.

This does not mean that addiction can simply be cured, or that treatment is a passive process, requiring no effort from the addict. However, addiction can be managed with the proper regimen of treatment – and through the effort and dedication of the addict.

Addiction is a manageable condition, and it is possible for drug addicts to overcome their addictive behaviour and re-enter their everyday lives as productive members of society.

Another fact to bear in mind is that addictive behaviour is a symptom of an underlying problem. That is why it is not enough for drug addicts simply to stop using. While cessation is an essential step in the recovery process, simply stopping to take drugs (or engaging in whatever activity an addict is compelled to perform) does not address the emotional issues underlying the addiction.

Confronting these issues directly can be an emotionally painful and stressful process, which is why it requires the guidance of experienced professionals.

Drug addicts will generally benefit from a tranquil retreat, removed from the stresses of everyday life, where they can engage with professional therapists and learn the skills to cope with normal life without resorting to addictive behaviours.

Some people view therapy as an escape or a quick fix. The fact is quite the opposite. Choosing to enter a programme of drug addiction rehabilitation is the first step towards taking control of one’s life. Therapy can be tough, but through persistence – and with the help of dedicated therapists – those suffering from addiction can learn to manage their condition and lead busy, fulfilling lives.

The correct drug rehabilitation treatment will vary from person to person. A qualified therapy team should be able to assess each addict on a case-by-case basis and recommend the right balance of therapies and treatments.

These will include some form of therapy, either person-to-person or group therapy (the therapist might also recommend a combination of treatments).

Individual treatment is an excellent forum for addicts to confront the emotional problems that are at the root of addiction, and learn how to build self-confidence and a healthy self image.

Treatment should also emphasise coping strategies, so that addicts can deal with the stresses of everyday life without resorting to drugs or other addictive behaviours.

Group therapy sessions are also a valuable forum for treatment. In group therapy, drug addicts tend to draw comfort and support from their peers, and gain valuable confidence through mentoring and encouraging others.

Oasis Counselling Centre is an addiction treatment centre in Plettenberg Bay. Oasis treats the problems underlying addictions, providing specialised treatment for drug addiction.
