Etta James (born Jamesetta Hawkins; January 25, 1938 — January 20, 2012) was an American singer whose style spanned a variety of music genres including blues, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, soul, gospel and jazz. She faced a number of personal problems, including drug addiction, before making a musical resurgence in the late 1980s with the album The Seven Year Itch. She is regarded as having bridged the gap between rhythm and blues and rock and roll, and is the winner of six Grammys and 17 Blues Music Awards. She was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001, and the Grammy Hall of Fame in both 1999 and 2008. Frequently, those who abuse drugs began to dabble in them out of sheer curiosity while others started in order to socially “fit in.” But as they continued to use the drug or drugs of their choice, the occasional participation became a regular habit they could no longer control. When the drugs became habitual, their tolerance levels began to increasing, requiring them to consume more in order to maintain the level of “high” their bodies and minds were used to.

Those who abuse drugs will develop biological, emotional, and psychological addictions. When these people attempt to seek the appropriate help, their drug addiction has usually altered their entire state of being. And because of the various negative changes experienced by the body, drug abusers find it increasingly difficult to keep their drug urges under control and can no longer ignore them.

In most cases, drug abusers will undergo a variety of biological changes due to their uncontrollable drug use, which results in abusers experiences drastic bodily changes shortly after developing an addiction. A few common changes include memory impairment, weight gain or loss, personality changes, mood changes, onset of chronic diseases, and even impairment or loss of gross motor skills.

Although many people who have a drug problem do seek treatment, not every one of these people will have successful drug addiction treatment results. Sometimes, an individual will undergo multiple treatments before regaining control over their life and their health. However, most of the people who do receive help for their drug addiction do so because the government or their loved ones forced them. There are only a few individuals who have enough self-motivation to recover from their drug addiction on their own.

There is a wide variety of rehabilitation programs that can help drug abusers become free from their addiction. So if one program is unsuccessful for an individual, he or she should try another type of program as that may be the one that triggers success. However, all people are different and will not respond in the same way to a particular treatment.

For those looking for drug treatment programs to help their loved ones overcome an addiction there are many kinds of programs available on a short-term to long-term basis. While the long-term treatment programs overall have the best success rates, plenty of drug abusers have found freedom from their addiction in short-term ones. It is important for the family and friends of a drug addict to understand these programs are only meant to act as a springboard for launching recovery; the long-term recovery happens every day and is assisted by the emotional support from the addict’s family as well as his or her accountability partner.

Drug addictions are certainly huge problems but they can be fixed. The first realization any drug abuser needs to come to is they are not weak for succumbing to their drug urges but are actually being influenced by physical changes taking place inside of them. With the right type of treatment, success can be theirs and sobriety can once again rule.

Brent McNutt enjoys networking with healthcare professionals online. It is actually a brain disease as the abuse of drugs leads to changes in the structure and the functioning of the individual’s brain. Drug addiction costs taxpayers millions of dollars each year and is a major public health concern for all of us, as it is a chronic relapsing disorder, which means that it lasts a long time and individuals who are trying to quit are apt to start using drugs again.

Addiction

Drug abuse causes changes in the brain, which then leads to certain behaviour, like taking the drug compulsively, but drug addicts can learn to change their behaviour.

This addiction is influenced by a range of factors which involve one’s genes, environment, and the age of the person when drugs were first used. Addiction to drugs and alcohol is a vicious cycle that can destroy lives, families, friendships, and anything else it comes into contact with, and the individual can become addicted to many drugs, not just so called street drugs like heroin. It should be understood as a chronic recurring illness.

Treatment

Drug addiction treatment is for people who find themselves not able to cope with life without drugs or alcohol and can be described as the therapeutic and educational process of initiating recovery. When it comes to prescription drug addiction, one of the main problems is that it is a hidden disorder. The treatment of drug addiction can vary widely according to the sort of drugs used, amount of drugs involved, duration of the drug addiction and any medical complications that occur. Any treatment also has to take into account the needs of the individual concerned.

Treatment for substance addiction is administered in many different settings, employing a selection of behavioural and pharmacological approaches and can be tailored to each patient’s drug abuse patterns and any co-occurring medical, psychiatric, and social problems they may have. This can then hopefully lead to sustained recovery and a life without drugs. Treatment medications, such as LAAM, methadone, and naltrexone, are available for any patient who is addicted to opiates. Conclusion It’s a sad fact that drug addiction along with alcohol addiction is the number one cause of death among young people. The good news is that although breaking a drug addiction can be extremely difficult, it is by no means impossible. Obtaining the correct treatment is absolutely vital in an effort to end this compulsive behaviour.

Discover a lot more about various health problems at health concerns

Article Source:
http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=James_Hunaban

Drug Addiction: The consequences of drug use

This is what we found when we went inside a burned down factory in Holyoke Mass. They operate with the aim of helping people addicted to alcohol and drugs curb their cravings. Self-help groups, support groups, individuals, and several other corporations are a part of this effort. These forums are formed to extend the reach of a proven effective program and help more people who need their services through funding treatment research, spreading awareness, and potentially providing scholarships.

Many such forums maintained online feature extensive resources such as current and past issues of AT Forum newsletters, special research reports, FAQs, notices of upcoming treatment techniques, and much more. Few such forums are Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (SAMHSA), Addiction Treatment Forum, The Stanton Peele Addiction Website, or JoinTogether.org.

The forums operate with initiatives and programs that are based on research findings and the general consensus of experts that for most individuals, treatment and recovery in a community-based, coordinated system of comprehensive services work in a better manner. They also list out facility locators where a searchable directory of drug and alcohol treatment programs shows the location of facilities around the country that treat alcoholism, alcohol abuse, and drug abuse problems. The locator includes more than 11,000 addiction treatment programs including residential treatment centers, outpatient treatment programs, and hospital inpatient programs for drug addiction and alcoholism. Listings usually include treatment programs for marijuana, cocaine, and heroin addiction, as well as drug and alcohol treatment programs for adolescents and adults.

The forums provide brochures, posters and television, radio live-read and print advertisements that deliver messages about the dangers of prescription drug abuse. While the campaign is targeted at teens and young adults, its message is relevant to all consumers who abuse prescription pain relievers. Some forums maintain treatment improvement agencies which provide information exchange between the forum’s staff and state and local alcohol and substance abuse agencies. This directory contains contact information for all state alcohol and drug abuse agencies and provides a link to the agencies’ Web sites.

Addiction Treatment [http://www.e-AddictionTreatment.com] provides detailed information on Addiction Treatment, Drug Addiction Treatment, Alcoholism Addiction Treatment, Addiction Treatment Programs and more. Drug addiction was once regarded as a moral flaw in the past and incarceration, church-guided prayer, and sending addicts to asylums were the most prevalent forms of treatment then. However times have changed and so have perceptions of the general public and drug addicts are being considered as just patients that need immediate treatment and moral support. It’s a kind of disease that causes long-lasting changes in the brain and therefore needs to be treated urgently to help addicts resume a normal life. Treatments in rehab centers of Utah today are customized to accommodate all sorts of addictive conditions and are often a combination of behavioral therapy and drug to get rid off the addiction completely. Therapy is crucial to help the addict come to terms with his addiction and become more receptive to treatment. On the other hand, drugs can prevent relapse, reduce cravings, and help reduce withdrawal symptoms.

Although a variety of drugs like cocaine and heroin are being abused in Utah, the main concern however still remains to be meth production and abuse. Utah law enforcement is facing the biggest challenge of bringing it under control and has therefore established several drug courts to combat drug addiction effectively. Club drugs are also being abused by teenagers on a large scale and Ecstasy happens to be the second largest drug threat to the State after meth. The establishment of these courts indicates Utah’s strong determination to curtail the rising number of drug related crimes in the State. As per the records, it is believed that the number of arrests for drug related crimes has shot up radically and has more than doubled and the most baffling fact about this is that the same offenders appear in courts repeatedly for a new drug related crime. This only suggests how weak and ineffective traditional methods of dealing with drug addiction are! In order to treat addiction, the State has decided to adopt a more prudent approach and instead of the traditional methods such as “strict probation” or “mandatory imprisonment”, prefer to offer inpatient and outpatient treatments. The need for drug courts stemmed from the baffling statistics related to drug related crime rates in the State of Utah. For instance, during the period between 1989 and 1998, drug sale and manufacturing arrests increased by 263 percent while the number of arrests for drug related crimes surged by 335 percent indicating the huge impact of drugs on crime.

It has been observed that the treatment methods used by drug courts are extremely effective and a huge number of addicts who have been treated this way have managed to keep their addiction at bay successfully. This has given a major impetus to both the state and the addict as well. Having got rid of it, the chances of an addict returning to crime are very remote.

Concerned about your child and don’t know where to turn?

We’re here to help.

In an effort to reduce prescription drug abuse, the North Dakota Department of Human Services, North Dakota Indian Affairs Commission, and Tribal Prevention Coordinators announced today they are joining forces by launching prevention efforts to reduce prescription drug abuse. Prescription drug abuse has increased over the past decade. Limiting access to abuseable medications is an effective strategy to decrease abuse of prescription drugs. The goal of this campaign is to encourage community members to lock medications and/or keep them in a safe place. Also provided is information on appropriate disposal methods of unused medications.
Video Rating: 0 / 5

More Prescription Drug Abuse Information…
<BR%20/>Tags: substance abuse, Drug, Treatment, prescription drug abuse, alcohol abuse <BR%20/>
