the problem is, chemical imbalances change over time, and people habituate to medication and the efficacy wears off over time. that’s definitely a big contributing factor to why there is no ‘big fix’. each neuron responsible for the creation and uptake of neurotransmitters would have to be affected properly to get the right balance. certain doses of meds for one person work perfectly, whereas someone else: they barely work, or have the worst possible effect imagineable.
it’s even harder because, in a lot of ways, neurobiologists don’t even know WHY these chemical components work to affect depression. so the cause of depression isn’t even entirely known. we know WHAT chemicals *can* be involved in it. but that’s about it. it’s a very difficult disease to pinpoint.
