So I Just Got Out of Drug Rehab, and Was Recently Prescribed Xanax.?
Question by sypher88: So I just got out of drug rehab, and was recently prescribed xanax.?
I was recently in drug rehab from June 1st, until July 5th for opiate addiction. I have been attending AA/NA meetings twice a day since my discharge from rehabilitation.
I have been having extreme anxiety and went to the doctor. I told her I was a recovering drug addict, but she still recommended i take xanax over buspar (the non addictive anti anxiety agent). Xanax has been the ONLY drug that works for my anxiety. I was originally prescribed this before going to rehab, and they took it away from me. Is it wrong that I take this medication if its the only drug ive tried that works?
I also have tried : zoloft, welbutrin, paxil, buspar, and many more.

I would suggest listening to you’re doctor because she seems to know what agrees with you, although you don’t wanna become addicted to xanax now that you have just recovered from a different addiction, if you really have such anxiety i would just say to take the xanax but in moderation.

I am not sure it’s correct to ask: is it “wrong” that I take this medication?
It is not right or wrong – but it IS definitely putting you at greater risk for relapse, given you have that risk of addiction at the outset. While you may have a genuine diagnosis of anxiety, you are also probably comfortable now admitting that you may have unconscious motivations moving you, even stirring anxiety within you, to justify taking this medicine.
I cannot be your doctor online, but I would encourage you to try more aggressively to persuade your doctor that a non-addictive medicine like buspar might be a better first choice in trying to assuage your anxiety disorder. If that is not amenable, then I would ask her to prescribe your medicine weekly, to keep you honest and avoid self-increasing of dosage.
