Prescription Drug Abuse: Addiction Treatment Forums
Treatment forums mainly report on substance abuse and addiction therapies, research, news, and events of interest to both healthcare professionals and patients. They operate with the aim of helping people addicted to alcohol and drugs curb their cravings. Self-help groups, support groups, individuals, and several other corporations are a part of this effort. These forums are formed to extend the reach of a proven effective program and help more people who need their services through funding treatment research, spreading awareness, and potentially providing scholarships.
Many such forums maintained online feature extensive resources such as current and past issues of AT Forum newsletters, special research reports, FAQs, notices of upcoming treatment techniques, and much more. Few such forums are Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (SAMHSA), Addiction Treatment Forum, The Stanton Peele Addiction Website, or JoinTogether.org.
The forums operate with initiatives and programs that are based on research findings and the general consensus of experts that for most individuals, treatment and recovery in a community-based, coordinated system of comprehensive services work in a better manner. They also list out facility locators where a searchable directory of drug and alcohol treatment programs shows the location of facilities around the country that treat alcoholism, alcohol abuse, and drug abuse problems. The locator includes more than 11,000 addiction treatment programs including residential treatment centers, outpatient treatment programs, and hospital inpatient programs for drug addiction and alcoholism. Listings usually include treatment programs for marijuana, cocaine, and heroin addiction, as well as drug and alcohol treatment programs for adolescents and adults.
The forums provide brochures, posters and television, radio live-read and print advertisements that deliver messages about the dangers of prescription drug abuse. While the campaign is targeted at teens and young adults, its message is relevant to all consumers who abuse prescription pain relievers. Some forums maintain treatment improvement agencies which provide information exchange between the forum’s staff and state and local alcohol and substance abuse agencies. This directory contains contact information for all state alcohol and drug abuse agencies and provides a link to the agencies’ Web sites.
