Question by Liz: How does being sworn in turn politicians into medical experts?
I’m curious to find out what magical event occurs that turns politicians into medical experts, fit to legislate on matters affecting healthcare options for providers and their patients. The last I checked, only about 4-5% of members of Congress have medical training, and only a handful specialized in gynecology. Yet somehow, plenty of politicians with absolutely no medical training or expertise are trying to turn a medical issue of reproductive healthcare into a political issue, on the grounds of “morality” and “religious freedom”. I understand and support the exemption for religious institutions, but measures like the Blunt Amendment (which, though voted down, was probably the first in a slew of coming attacks on patient autonomy) are ridiculous.
Don’t give me the “forcing people to pay” nonsense. Health insurers “force” the insured to pay for things all the time. As a young, healthy woman who only has about one check-up per year, my premium does not solely cover my health expenses, since my health expenses do not amount to all that much. That extra money is used elsewhere to pay for other people’s care. (Even though I don’t actually feel this way) I could say that I morally oppose paying for the health expenses of those with substance abuse issues, sexually transmitted diseases, or obesity, since these people “did it to themselves” and they should be held personally responsible; after all, it goes against my sense of morality to pay for other people’s poor decisions. Anyone could extend the morality issue to any given medical expense. Given how health insurance works, that’s just not reasonable.
So tell me, what is their secret? Has the spirit of Hippocrates descended upon Capitol Hill and anointed them with sacred medical knowledge? Is that why they’re so much more qualified to make decisions affecting patient care than physicians and patients themselves?
