Sinus vs. My Boyfriend Both Are Very Stubborn .. Surgery?
Question by Olive: Sinus vs. my boyfriend both are very stubborn .. surgery?
My boyfriend has been bothered by his sinuses everyday for the past two years. It has always given him problems but it seems worse lately. It affects his sleeping and mine cause he constantly has to turn over so he can breath. I told him to go to a specialist I think surgery sounds like a good option. I was wondering how effective these surgeries are? Does it take time to heal and what is it they actually do in surgery, how is it corrected? I would appreciate personal experience stories from people who have had the surgery. Thank you for any advice!

I had the sinus surgery. It’s a last ditch effort. Your boyfriend’s sinuses may be chronic infection, allergies, or any number of health issues. All should be rules out or dealt with before considering surgery.
Recovery from the surgery is 4-6 weeks. They go in and cut bigger “windows” in the sinuses and even reset the septum if needed, in order for the sinuses to drain.

The surgeries are generally temporarily effective, but not very helpful in the long run. What they actually do depends on what the problem is. They may un-deviate a septum so that he can breathe better on one side of his nose. They may remove polyps or chunks of turbinates to make more room for air to flow and sinuses to drain. They may surgically drain sinuses if antibiotics don’t do the trick pre-surgery and he has an infection. Recovery doesn’t take long, but it does take time to heal.
Personally, I had one surgery that let me breathe easier for about a year. Several years later, I had another surgery that let me breathe easier for about a half year. At this point, it’s like I never had either surgery and I wish I hadn’t wasted the time. Which is what most friends and doctors told me in advance.
