How to Make My Scholarship Essay “pop”?
Question by Derek: How to make my scholarship essay “pop”?
I am going to start a scholarship essay for “alert Magazine” and I need a way to make the first lines really stand out. The topic is supposed to be about substance abuse prevention, I guess what normal people like me and you could do to help prevent it. Any ideas?

Well… a good place to start would be to realize that “normal people” are the ones who abuse substances. I’d bet that quite a few people you think are “normal” are abusing some type of substance… and I’m not talking caffeine either.
Speaking of which, caffeine, food addiction, etc. are also forms of substance abuse. It is the abuse of any substance.
Perhaps even consider taking that approach to your intro… something like, “How would you react if I told you someone in your family is abusing some type of substance? How would you react if you were to discover that 20% of the people you know abuse substances illegally?” … get the right stats, of course, but you get the drift.
Or you could always paint a picture… a functional addict that goes to work every day, and no one would ever know they’re abusing drugs. Or a junkie on the street everyone judges, but has a heartbreaking story behind it…
Hope this helps & good luck!
