Below provides detailed info about HM C school assignment:
“Advanced training in a “C” school, a tour at sea or ashore, overseas or with the Marine Corps may follow this initial tour. The HM field has several sub-specialities in which personnel may request advanced “C” school training (see “Sub-Specialties Available for This Rating,” below).
En route to their first permanent duty stations, most male HMs will be assigned to either Field Medical Service School, Camp Lejeune NC, or Camp Pendleton CA, for specialized training in the knowledge and skills required to perform medical services in the field with the Marine Corps and/or the “Seabees.”
Other Requirements
•Applicants must be informed that they will be assigned to duties involving direct patient care and clinical services
•Male applicants must be informed that they may be assigned to the Fleet Marine Force for duty.
•60 month service obligation
•A licensed physician or dentist licensed or graduate of medical or dental school in any country is not eligible for this rating.
•No history of drug abuse or commission of offenses involving alcohol, narcotics or other controlled substances with the exception of experimental or casual use of marijuana.
•Applicants must be of the highest standards as requirements are strictly adhered to before accession into the HM community.”
For 2012 HM C School application and selection, following applies:
“-All applicants must be PTS “INRATE” approved “PRIOR” to the C School package being submitted to NPC. All packages that require PTS and are not “INRATE” approved will be returned non-selected immediately.
-HM8425 Surface IDC: Pay grade E5 – E7 is in need. If Sailor does not meet CANTRAC requirements you may request a waiver from the Enlisted Community Manager PRIOR to submitting package. E5 Sailors with top 92 percent GPA will be advanced to E6 upon completion of course and meeting TIR.
-HM8402 Submarine IDC’s are high demand. Please check the CANTRAC for qualification. Also refer to MILPERSMAN 1306-402 for Submarine ASVAB qualifications and Page 13 for Sub Vol. E5 Sailors with top 92 percent GPA will be advanced to E6 upon completion of course and meeting TIR.
-If you are an 8427 or 8493 E5 (with 2 years TIR PRIOR to CLCVN date) thru E7 looking for a new challenge we need you in 8403 and 8494. E5 Sailors with top 92 percent GPA are advance to E6.
-Candidates are needed for Recon 8427 and DMT 8493. These NEC are high paced and rewarding to those that can accept a challenge. We are looking for E1 thru E4 with the E4 being advanced to E5 under the STAR program providing the general STAR requirements are met. There is also a generous SRB assigned to these NEC’s. Refer to MILPERSMAN 1306-983 for requirements and if accessible, contact your local DMT or Recon Corpsman for screening.”
Based on the above, unless you are an E-5 or above, the only way you can get to C school is to request assignment to Recon 8427 and DMT 8493. Recon is most likely with Marine Force Recon and/or Navy SEALs – not an easy rating to get due to the physical requirements. A corpsman resting 10 miles back is not help to the the guys who are up front engaging an enemy.
