Drug Addiction: Inherent Risks of Drug Addiction

What is drug addiction?

Drug addiction is the uncontrollable use of a substance regardless of the harmful side effects that lead to severe health issues. Drug addiction refers to the action of using a particular drug in excessive amounts, or using it for a purpose in which the drug was not medically intended for. However, just dependence on a particular substance is neither sufficient nor necessary to describe an addiction. This is so because there are a few substances that do not cause addiction, but surely cause serious dependence. Some of the most common substances that are largely known as addictive are heroin, cocaine, alcohol, prescription narcotics, and meth.

Causes of drug addiction

Often if drug abuse goes unnoticed or unattended it can lead to addiction or dependence.  In some cases the user might also start using the drugs to get ease from physical pain or stressful situations. Despite countless studies, the exact reason or causes of drug addiction is not yet known.

Often times, when medical professionals study patients who seek drug addiction treatment such as, cocaine treatment, heroin treatment, prescription narcotic treatment, or alcohol treatment, there are usually certain shared characteristics. These characteristics may include a chemical imbalances, emotional distress or anxiety, peer pressure, and environmental stress.

Destruction caused by Drug Addiction

The alcoholic or the addict who indulges will suffer immensely; however, the family will also suffer just the same. Studies have shown family members to develop the same types of illness as the user.

Often times the children who exposed to addiction will suffer the most. Children in the situations will show higher risks of developing addiction later on in life. Addicts who fail to seek proper addiction treatment will more than likely expose their families to the undesirable consequences of addiction such as, disturbed physical and emotional health and the inability to manage daily life.
