Question by Katie B: is it illegal for a prospective landlord to ask about your criminal past and drug abuse?
I recently saw an application for an apartment (not for me) and was surprised to see questions like “do you have a history of drug abuse?” and ” have you ever been arrested?”. It seems that like a job interview, these questions should be illegal. Are they?

They can always check your records which are made available via the internet.
