On January 25, 2006, Andersen was disqualified from the NBA for violating the league’s anti-drug policy by testing positive for a banned substance. Andersen’s suspension fell under the league’s category of “drugs of abuse,” violation of which is possible grounds for expulsion from the NBA under the league’s collective bargaining agreement. Andersen attempted to appeal the ruling through arbitration, but the arbitrator ruled to uphold his dismissal in March 2006. He was eligible for reinstatement effective January 25, 2008.

How Is Drug Abuse Socially Constructed?
Question by Eliot S: How is drug abuse socially constructed?
Best answer:
Answer by Mikkfinn
Because people tend to gather in peer groups where their drug use is acceptable. Surrounding yourself with enablers and other drug users tends to make your own bahavior seem normal.
Answer by senlin
It is a social construct because the determination of what is considered “abuse” is totally societally determined. There are some places where any use of an illicit drug is considered “abuse.” There are other places where use of certain drugs is of little consequence, is condoned, or is legal. Drugs used for religious purposes among some cultures would be considered drug abuse among others. There are no clear markers for what constitutes abuse, so it is socially determined.
