Was Edgar Allan Poe Really Cruel to Animals?

Question by Darcie: Was Edgar Allan Poe really cruel to animals?
I have heard that there some simimilarities between the author and the narrator of “The Black Cat”, such as the “alcohol” thing, but is there actually may evidence to suggest that he abused or killed cats or any other animal species? He certainly has a reputation for being dark and attracted to this like that, but did he actually commit any serious crimes like that?

Not that I know of. And i think that would be something my English teacher would have told use before reading his work.

Answer by Eliza
Absolutely not! In fact, he had a particular love for cats–you’ll note that in “The Black Cat,” Poe’s narrator feels more guilty about his murder of his cat than the killing of his wife.

His cat, Catterina, incidentally, is quite famous among Poe scholars.
