Controversy over AD/HD is not because of one thing; there are quite a few controversial decisions related to the disorder. One reason is because the disorder was only labeled recently. 40 years ago, no one would have heard of AD/HD- people with the disorder were seen as “hyper kids” or someone with learning problems.
Treating the disorder, has only been seen in the past 30 or so years. they’re still researching treatments and only started prescribing medications under strict rules. Dosages, proper medication, causes and basically everything about the disorder are still being looked into.. treatments for AD/HD are young and still being looked into.

Your friend may be taking drugs as a symptom of a larger problem. He may be depressed or have mental health issues. He may be taking drugs to deal with this problem because in his state of mind he may not see any other option. I think this is probable, especially if his reason is because he does not have enough strength and sees no other solution.
