Are There People Who Are “programmed” to Be Depressed?

Question by Shea Vargas: Are there people who are “programmed” to be depressed?
I’ve had depression for four years and nothing has helped it. Therapy, medication, talking, nothing helps and it’s getting worse. I’m getting addicted to drugs I’ve only tried once and it’s hard for me to get off them. What’s wrong with me…?

Answer by DelilahDisaster
Depression is a chemical imbalance in your brain, that you are usually born with, so yes, it’s kind of like being “programmed” to be depressed. However medication should help. Just keep trying different ones until you find one (or a combination of a few) that works for you.
And if you have a history of addiction in your family, then you’re more likely to become addicted yourself. Perhaps you should go to a drug counselor, or Narcotics Anonymous meetings and get a sponsor. They can help a lot.
I hope everything works out for you, and remember, if you get too depressed, there’s always hotlines you can call, or you can just call 911.

Feminists: Do You Know Your Doctor’s Religious Views? Did You Know It Could Affect Your Treatment?

Question by edith clarke: Feminists: Do you know your doctor’s religious views? Did you know it could affect your treatment?
“Many physicians feel no obligation to tell patients about legal but morally controversial medical treatments or to refer patients to doctors who do not object to those treatments,” report researchers from the University of Chicago in the Feb. 8, 2007, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

For example, of the 1,000+ doctors surveyed, 52 percent objected to abortion for failed contraception. So if you or yours requested an abortion, and your doctor objected, the doctor may very well refuse to refer you to another physician who would be willing to perform an abortion.

Do you know your doctor’s religious views? or their views on controversial issues that could affect your health?

Is There a Difference Between Being Drunk and Alcohol Poisoning?

Question by brittnay: Is there a difference between being drunk and alcohol poisoning?
Are they similar? Or are they different?

Best answer:

Answer by JanetM
Sure… being drunk CAN kill you, but doesn’t usually. Alcohol poisoning WILL kill you… thus the word “poisoning”.

“It is important to be aware about the difference between alcohol poisoning and getting drunk. Impaired judgment, a hampered state of mind or loss of coordination are the usual symptoms of a person getting drunk. Alcohol poisoning, on the other hand, signifies a much more critical situation. The condition mostly results from drinking a large amount of alcohol in a short period of time. In this condition, the consumption of alcohol is too much for the body to process it safely. When there is too much alcohol in the system, the body’s involuntary actions such as breathing, heartbeat, and gad reflex begin to shut down. Common symptoms include unconsciousness (passing out), low body temperature (hypothermia), pale skin, irregular or slow breathing, seizures, vomiting and confusion. The affected person may be conscious but unresponsive. The symptom of passing out indicates a more severe condition, as if the person cannot be roused, then there is a risk of death. Alcohol poisoning, with or without its usual symptoms, must receive immediate treatment.”
