Yes, I am sure that there are other people like him. I just hope that they learn to control their anger and not take it out on innocent people.

Are you asking if there are a significant number of people who are likely to go on a shooting spree? Or are you asking if there are more people with mental illness similar to his? The answer to the first question is no, not a “significant number.” The answer to the second question is yes, there are thousands of people with serious mental illness.

We don’t know for sure if he has a mental illness or what type it may be, but it sounds quite likely that he does have an illness. Possibly paranoid schizophrenia.

Mental illness such as schizophrenia develop gradually over years, close to a decade. Most people with mental illness, even if not treated, are NOT prone to violence. There is not profile for someone like Loughner. To create a profile would mean collecting thousands of people who would never commit a violent crime. There is also no one singular identifier to indicate someone who may use violence. Multiple factors are used to assess a threat. Having a particular mental illness in itself is not an indicator of violence. Drug and alcohol abuse does not mean a person will be violent. Playing violent video games do not make a person violent. All these things together as well as other factors are used to assess risk.

The link below refers to adolescence “school shooters” but the methods certainly could be used for adults, as well. It refers to a four-prong method of assessing a risk. Chapter 4 covers examples of what to look for. the publication also covers when to intervene and what type of intervention may be appropriate.

Hope that helps to answer your question.
